Artist Bio
Midnight Youth truly hit the ground running on the back of the phenomenal success of their first single ‘The Letter’, from their debut album THE BRAVE DON’T RUN (released 27 April 2009).‘The Letter’ was the #1 most played New Zealand song on radio and the music video simultaneously hit #1 on two major music television networks. The track also held a Top 10 position for more than 15 weeks in the Radioscope Top 100.
THE BRAVE DON’T RUN was recorded in studios in New York (whose previous inhabitants include music luminaries Ryan Adams and Sufjan Stevens) and Auckland (the D4). The album was produced by Brooklyn’s Terence Dover and Auckland’s Tui award winning Andrew Buckton.
Leading up to the album release, the band spent a busy six months touring New Zealand and the United States - including shows across New Zealand with The Veronicas, and Metro Station. The North American dates included the acclaimed SXSW music festival in Austin (Texas), and shows in New York and at Los Angeles famed Viper Room.
Midnight Youth were also selected by Australian rock legends INXS as their New Zealand support on a recent tour. INXS were so impressed by this new talent, they later proclaimed the band as, ‘One of the best they had played with in Australasia!’
Midnight Youth have also played across the country with bands such as Incubus, Ok Go and locals Opshop.
The band formed in 2006 and immediately displayed signs of what was to come with debut singles, ‘Supernatural’ and ‘A New Day’, achieving Top 40 NZ Airplay on radio and TV. They were also one of the top unsigned bands on MySpace in 2008.
These independent single releases built strong momentum for the band, attaining airplay on influential L.A radio station Indie 103.1 (which includes Henry Rollins and Sex Pistol Steve Jones amongst its DJs). They also appeared on the U.S Direct TV network show, Project MyWorld.
This success was been backed up by their second single from THE BRAVE DON’T RUN, ‘All On Our Own’ - the second-most added track on New Zealand radio after just one week, and one of the biggest radio hits in NZ this year spending 7 weeks at #1 on All Airplay. A successful nationwide tour of NZ followed and THE BRAVE DON’T RUN was certified GOLD. July 2009 saw the band release their 3rd single from THE BRAVE DON’T RUN ‘Learning to Fall’ with it’s stunning video shot in New York with the Manhattan cityscape creating a breathtaking backdrop.
Never slowing down, Midnight Youth spent August launching their campaign in Australia with a nationwide tour. The Trilogy Tour saw them team up with Dukes of Windsor & Trial Kennedy for a nationwide 23 date trek around Australia while ‘The Letter’ made it’s debut on the nations airwaves. THE BRAVE DON’T RUN is set for release in Australia in April 2010.
September 09 bought more good news for the band with The Letter earning a place in the finals at the annual APRA Silver Scroll awards and if that wasn’t enough the album has earned a whopping 8 Tui nominations at the 2009 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, taking out awards on the night for ‘Best Rock Album’ and ‘Best Group’ and ‘Best Engineer’ in the technical categories.
While THE BRAVE DON’T RUN rapidly reached Platinum status a fourth single ‘Cavalry’ is the bold opening track on the album, written in New York and motivated by the city and the experience of touring as a young band. ‘Cavalry’ was instantly added to radio and TV sitting comfortably at #1 on Rock Radio for 6 weeks over Christmas 2009 - and clearly makes the bands sentiments known!
With songs drawing from their extremely diverse musical influences, this opener sets the scene and theme for a record that takes a journey through notions of joy, despair, youth, loss and hope. This is complemented by the unique album artwork, inspired by the lyrics and experiences of the band over the year while making the record. THE BRAVE DON’T RUN has seen Midnight Youth have a phenomenal year and is only the beginning of a long and successful journey.
